OATH, I DID IT AGAIN
1/20/2005

After much pre-release hype and going way over budget, President Bush's second inauguration opened today, bringing with it the moment many Americans were waiting for: the end of Bush's first term.

The vice president took his oath first, and unfortunately, it did not go off without a hitch. After Hastert said, "I’ll support and defend the nation..." Dick Cheney repeated, "I’ll defend and support this nation," giving remaining Kerry supporters all the reason they needed to label him a flip-flop.

Right before noon, the president was sworn in, saying, "I will faithfully execute the office of the President of the United States and will to the best of my ability preserve, protect and defend the constitution of the United States." This serves as a good reminder: before anyone gets upset with the president, remember, the oath only asks for "the best of [his] ability." It doesn't specify quality; he just has to try.

Bush then stepped up to give his second inaugural address. It's the 16th follow-up inaugural in history, which may explain why all the meaningful phrases had already been used up as he offered, "Self-government relies in the end on the governing of the self." That particular passage is also available to all Americans, in the commemorative 2005 Inaugural Fortune Cookie. The president then added, "Lucky number: 29 14 3 13"

The president also took a bold stance against racism, stating, "And our country must abandon all the habits of racism, because we cannot carry the message of freedom and the baggage of bigotry at the same time." He continued, "I mean, one at a time, maybe."
