Aussies early adopters

Australians are widely recognised as early adopters of new technologies.

According to local mobile phone carrier 3, we bucked the International trend during the world cup and watched lots and lots of the World Cup live via mobile phone. It will be interesting to see the final stats in a few weeks, once 3 have finalised them and released them publicly.

Um, how can we be early adopters when it usually takes 3 or more years for the latest tech from US/Japan to reach here?

I do understand why certain tech firms don't release new models (or even as wide a range of models) in Australia as they do in US, Japan or Europe - it's because we don't have the population base to support this sort of market, which the other countries do.

But early adopters? Perhaps 'early adopters' in the sense than when the new tech is available, the uptake on it is faster than in other places, on a per capita basis...
