short story (why are you here?)

Why Are You Here?

The car rolls to a stop.

Now, in stories, you'd figure on a body being rolled out a door. Or maybe a shadowy figure walks up to the car and shoots the occupants. In today's story, the car stops.

Not a lot happens for a while.

Then, just as it starts to get tedious, the driver's door opens and the driver gets out. It's hard to see then clearly through the rain - I forgot to mention it was raining. It was a dark and stormy night. Such a cliché, but it works.

Tonight it's just dark and raining.

They're also on the other side of the car. Even in the movies they do that to you. Builds tension, so I read somewhere.

The driver walks off into the rain.

Right about now, you're probably wondering what's going on and why you're here. Let's go find out. Follow the driver.

You step out of the shadows.

If you ever wondered why gumshoes in old PI stories wear raincoats and fedoras, wonder no longer. Keeps the rain off and both hands free. So unlike the driver under her umbrella, you can do two things at once.

It doesn't take long to catch up with her.

And kill her. From behind, left hand over her mouth, drawing your knife deep and hard across her throat with your right. Simple, quick, effective.

Now you know why you were here.

please do be offering critiques, and so forth.
