It was a lot like that...

It usually opens all sorts of doors for part time employment as well. Often being in the process of getting a PhD substitutes for actually having one.

Indeed. I have not actually begun/enrolled, and I have access to many additional 'perks'. Not the least of which being that I'm now accepted as a permanent-for-the-mid-term member of the staff.

On the flip side, I'm now being courted for committees and such ...
