[livejournal.com profile] childofmarduk's little rant "Proof That Americans Prefer Whipped Cream to Literature"

there is no (single) culture.

the west, the usa, minnesota.

all of these are comprised of many 'cultures'.

there may be underlying themes, but there is no controlling mind.

[that ought to be obvious, right? just like the title of [livejournal.com profile] childofmarduk's rant.]

I like your comments to that guy.

I'm with the commenter who is pleased to see people reading anything. I think there is a place for escapist lit -- it is still more intellectually stimulating than TV.

Point of order! Various studies have shown that some of modern television (shows like BSG or B5, for example), which have long story arcs and convoluted plots are more intellectually stimulating than "traditional" intellectual ideas - for example, reading Tom Swifties.

Uh..what are BSG and B5? Could it be that I am not watching the right shows. :-)

i suspect that [livejournal.com profile] xtine_38 refers to the general mass of tv programming, rather than the few interesting shows.

reading itself is good. but reading that challenges is better.

too many people choose to (only) read material that is entirely escapist, that does little or nothing to them but entertain.

some tv is good, very good. ditto re movies. much simply entertains.

[not that i think entertainment as such is bad]

Agreed, on all comments.

I think we all do need to escape sometimes. It makes me happy to see people reading, and even happier to see them reading great books that will have an impact on their lives. What is great/meaningful is open to debate.

i imagine great/meaningful to be something that has an impact (positive) on their lives - just as you said <beam>
