something strange has been happening in the land of this lan

now, given that we're running a bunch of xp boxen off ethernet through a multi-port adsl modem, that in itself is not strange.

but my computer has decided that the modem is now an internet gateway™, having mysteriously achieved this hallowed status sometime today.

the consequence being that i now have rolling stats on upload and download speeds, volumes, and total time connected to the internet gateway™.

according to the this lan™ popup, packets sent and received are both around 30,000,000 over almost 5 days.

the internet gateway™ seems to match with the packets sent to the this lan™, but reports only about 300,000 out and 200,000 in via the internet gateway ...

but the reason for this post is the following: the internet gateway™ reports that i have been online for ... wait for it ... 13,111 and 3/4 days ... thats around 36 years ... which is pretty cool ... especially when i recall that i'm not yet 35 ... lol!    winxp.     it's a b00b b0mb :)

we (housemate™ and i) were saying the same thing about google™'s recently exposed purchase of dark fiber and loads of computers ...

it's not that computers are "taking over", it's more that people are enamoured of technological solutions to every damn thing. especially technology that helps them spend money in increasingly meaningless ways.

particularly americans. who think they own the net. and are paranoid that someone else might think the net might have a purpose other than spending money upon ...

Is that seriously the name of your network?

Because I think we should call it...

No, I'm sorry. I can't continue that sentence without laughing myself stupid. As it is, I'm still giggling about it, hoping my fellow cube-dwellers don't ask what's so funny.
